Heckler & Koch heeft vorig jaar besloten dat ze alleen nog NAVO en aanverwante landen te voorzien van hun beruchte geweren. Dat was én is goed nieuws; onlangs werd het besluit uiteengezet in de aandeelhoudersvergadering en daardoor weer in de pers. Wel met de ongelukkige titel Heckler & Koch quietly becomes world's most ethical gun-maker.Het beleid zal niet veranderen al werd de directeur ontslagen kort na de aandeelhoudersvergadering.

De stap heeft kortweg met vier recente ontwikkelingen te maken:

Hier komen verschillende aspecten samen. Een gerichte campagne tegen H&K leveringen, een algemene campagne in Duitsland tegen wapenexporten door een aantal groepen (NGO's en partijen als Die Linke, Der Grünen, en zelfs de SPD). 

Heckler en Koch kan bovendien gemakkelijker eieren voor zijn geld kiezen met een goed gevulde order portefeuille. Zal H&K wel leveren als dit past binnen Duitse overheidsbewapeningsprogramma's zoals voor de oppositie in Irak en Syrië? Ook die leveringen lagen de afgelopen jaren gevoelig binnen Duitland. Want dat is misschien een vijfde reden. In Duitsland is oorlog en bewapening een gevoelig onderwerp, omdat de geschiedenis er over de schouder kijkt en dat geeft ruimte voor dit soort opmerkelijke ontwikkelingen.
