'Wapenhandel VS staat onder druk Trump', was maar een van de koppen rond de protesten tegen de handel in handvuurwapens in de VS. Ieder jaar komen in de Verenigde Staten 30.000 mensen om door die geweren, pistolen en revolvers.

Nu kijken of de tegencampagne net zo effectief zal zijn, kwestie van duidelijke boodschap, slimme tactiek en zeer lange adem.
De wapenhandel staat onder Trump natuurlijk helemaal niet onder druk. In tegendeel. Hoewel wapenhandel in de Nederlandse pers vrijwel staat synoniem voor de handel in pistolen, geweren e.d. nemen die maar enkele procenten voor hun rekening van de in de gehele wapenhandel. Het grootste deel gaat naar de luchtmacht wapens (goed voor zo'n 50 % van alle omzet in de wapenindustrie), maar ook naar dure wapens als raketten, tanks, onderzeeboten etc. Veelal worden ze ingezet in eindeloze oorlogen tegen drugs en terrorisme. Oorlogen die niets oplossen en problemen verergeren, maar dit terzijde.
Het is fijn om te lezen dat de schietpartij ook tot iets positieve ontwikkelingen leidt en dat zelfs autoverhuur, beveiligingsbedrijven en supermarkten in de VS hun handen niet meer willen branden aan het verkopen van zware handvuurwapens aan mensen onder de 21, maar de wapenindustrie floreert onder Trump. Deze week kreeg die door de uitspraken van Putin over nieuwe wapens en de reactie van de NAVO daarop juist een ijskoude en aantrekkende wind mee.
